The oldest brewery in Germany and worldwide has brewed one of my favourite styles of beer. A Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel. A dark wheat beer has a fuller body , the dark malts used in the brew give the beer an added dimension. This offering rolls in at 5.3% ABV and when poured into the glass has a pleasing toffee , almost mahogany colour . Steady carbonation rolls up the glass at an almost pedestrian pace. On the first sip , or gulp, depending on how thirsty you are, you are hit and hit hard with a sparkling and fizzy edge to the beer. An almost caramel tinge to the taste. A strong yeasty element is clearly evident as well. There is a slight detection of coffee on the tongue as well. The dark malts used in the brew gives you extra muscle but that is overshadowed by the lively carbonation. All through the beer there is clear lacing that slowly glides down the side of the glass. On a hot Bavarian day , in a Biergarten this would be absolutely the correct beverage to consume. Maybe with a Weisswurst and a pretzel to accompany it too.
